Time: 6:30pm - 7.30pm

The UEA Chamber Choir warmly invite you to join them for their spring concert, ‘Orpheus Britannicus’, on Sunday 11 March at 6.30pm at St George’s Church, Tombland, Norwich.

The 30-strong choir, under the direction of UEA Choirmaster Tom Primrose, will explore the music of Purcell – Britain’s Orpheus – and some of the composers who were friends, contemporaries or simply influenced by the finest British musician of his day and many thereafter.

In November 1695, Henry Purcell died in London at the height of his career. During the three and a half decades of his short life he had established a position for himself, both in contemporary society and in the history books, as one of Britain’s greatest composers. He held a number of enviable positions in the musical life of London, composing works for the church and stage, for the salon and for bawdy clubs, many of which have remained popular to this day. He inspired and influenced not only his contemporaries and immediate successors, but also his teachers and almost every English composer since the seventeenth century. This programme explores not only Purcell’s choral music, but also that of his teachers, contemporaries, and the generation of composers who succeeded him in the early eighteenth century.

The concert will be performed in the beautiful, medieval surroundings of St George's Tombland.

The concert is free to attend and all are welcome.
